No Place to Call Home (2017) - UK

With colourful characters and luminous prose, No Place To Call Home is a tale of belonging, identity and immigration, of hope and hopelessness, of loss – not by death, but by distance– and, by no means the least, of love.

  • “I strongly urge you to pick up No Place To Call Home. Its touching characters and well-developed story lines will have you completely submerged. I read this book in two sittings. I couldn’t put it down.” - Brown Girl Reading

“A natural wordsmith, Bola’s prose flow as freely as his poems, No Place To Call Home is a strong debut and definitely a page turner, that you don’t want to miss out on.” - Vanessa Thomas, Melan Mag

“What I loved about this book was the perception and empathy—everyone has a story if you look close enough. I can’t recommend it enough.” - Suroor Alikhan, Talking About Books

Mask Off - Masculinity Redefined (2019)

In Mask Off, JJ Bola exposes masculinity as a performance that men are socially conditioned into. Using examples of non-Western cultural traditions, music and sport, he shines light on historical narratives around manhood, debunking popular myths along the way. He explores how LGBTQ men, men of colour, and male refugees experience masculinity in diverse ways, revealing its fluidity, how it's strengthened and weakened by different political contexts, such as the patriarchy or the far-right, and perceived differently by those around them.

  • “An antidote to Jordan Peterson” - Guardian

“An uncompromising, heartfelt and completely vital interrogation of this thing we call masculinity. Bubbling with new perspectives and major insights - this is the book about masculinity that we ALL need” - Jeffrey Boakye, author of 'Black, Listed: Black British Culture Explored'

“A vital addition to books on masculinity. It is opening up conversations, whilst offering guidance towards joyful, emotional, non-violent masculinities” - Bad Form

The Selfless Act of Breathing (2021)

Longing to escape the shadows in his mind and start anew, Michael decides to spontaneously pack up and go to America, the mythical ‘land of the free,’ where he imagines everything will be better, easier – a place where he can become someone new, someone without a past filled with pain. On this transformative journey, Michael travels from New York City to San Francisco, partying with new friends, sparking fleeting romances, and splurging on big adventures.

In the back of his mind, Michael has a plan: follow his dreams until the money in his bank account runs out, and then he will decide if his life is truly worth living…

Written in spellbinding prose, with Bola’s trademark, magnetic storytelling, The Selfless Act of Breathing is a heart-wrenching and deeply emotional novel about mental health, masculinity and the power of love.

  • “The poet’s lyrical second novel charts the odyssey of a disillusioned teacher who flees London for the US” - The Guardian

“Reports of Bola’s lyricism drew me to this novel in the first place, and I was not disappointed. His mind works in interesting ways to produce thought-provoking comments on setting and people, and everything is said in stunning language which never grows tired. His language works to beautify places often presented as void of beauty or unworthy of artistic representation, such as council estates and the backstreets of London. His depictions of love, too, which drive the novel, are intense and moving; love has been said many times and in many ways, yet Bola makes it new.” - Zadie Loft, Zitro Magazine

“The Selfless Act of Breathing is a deeply moving book. Bola really pulls all the stops to ask raw, painful, and honest questions about what mental health is, as it relates to masculinity, immigration, alienation, as well as love.” - Alesia Alexander, Brittle Paper

“Chronicling someone’s emotional deterioration can be a tricky affair, but Bola acquits himself beautifully; his prose is sensitive and powerful. Lovers of character studies that tend toward the dark will find much to admire in this novel.” - Kirkus
